About
Sean
Potts

Welcoming others—especially ‘the stranger’ (Matthew 25:35)—has been at the heart of my calling ever since I was welcomed by my childhood Episcopal church. I believe the vitality of our spiritual communities depends on our ability to open our doors and hearts to new people.

For over 30 years, I’ve led music that invites full participation—whether I’m leading bilingual songs at Santiago/Saint James Episcopal Church in Oakland, helping kids make a joyful noise at Vacation Bible School, or guiding music during a retreat. I create musical experiences that are inclusive, spirited, and accessible to people of all ages and backgrounds.

I draw deep inspiration from the paperless music tradition championed by the Music that Makes Community project, and I also love directing choirs and bands, helping them learn and share new music that brings their communities to life.

My journey started with a bass guitar in my youth church band, aslan, and has taken me through clubs, festivals, camps, and sanctuaries across the country—sharing funk, rock, folk, and sacred music that moves both body and soul. Giving people music that brings them alive is not just my passion—it’s my life’s work.

I believe God is still moving in our world in powerful, beautiful ways—and we can access that divine movement when we tune in to ourselves and one another. I often weave in sacred poetry, African drumming, movement, and improvisation to help groups experience the holy in creative, embodied ways.

In challenging times, music and spirituality sustain our hope and strengthen our efforts to build a more just and welcoming world. I would be honored to support your community in that sacred work.
